Insure vs. Ensure

Though they sound similar, these two words have distinct meanings and uses.

When you insure something, you are protecting yourself from financial loss.

We can insure your building against fire, theft, and other loss.

Ensure, on the other hand, means to make certain.

Ensure that the filing cabinet is locked before leaving each day.

The new meter ensures an accurate flow of oil to the pump.
