More great advice from Richard Branson

Richard Branson’s book, “Losing My Virginity: How I’ve Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way” offers great insight into the man behind the Virgin Group. In an earlier post, I reviewed five great concepts I gleaned from his book.  This passage offers two more nuggets of advice for entrepreneurs everywhere.

Richard is often asked why he participates in those dangerous activities (balloon rides around the world, driving a power about across the Atlantic). Here is how he responds:

“Part of me is driven to try new adventures, and I still find that I want to push myself to my limits. If I were to think about it more carefully, I would say that I love to experience as much of life as I can.”

Let’s review the important concepts here:

1. Pushing yourself to new limits. How often do you really put in that extra effort? Understand that you’ll continue to grow and prosper only if and when you go beyond the norm. Make those extra calls, stay a little later (or arrive in the office earlier), be a better steward of your time. It becomes habit forming, and your results will show it.

2. Experiencing as much of life as you can. Don’t hold back. Take that trip. Join that club. Sign up for that course. Strike out in that new business. Do what it is that you’ve yearned for and dreamt about. If you don’t, you’ll look back years from now and regret it.

Sometimes we hold back out of fear of failure. Remember that in failing you experience something as well. Get off your chair and do it!
